本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I don’t watch TV at home, but it is one of my favorite activities when I travel, especially in a foreign country. While the commercials in Canada and the U.S can be quite boring and lack imagination and creativity, European versions are much better, usually feminine, artsy and romantic; at least it hasn’t been repeated so many times that I become bored.
I was watching Italian television program when I was in Berne, Switzerland. It was a talk show with music, host, guest speakers and many gorgeous women, all with beautiful long legs and perfect figures. Other than picking up a few Italian words now and then, I had no idea what was going on and what they were talking about. But it was fun to watch and make up my own narrative. After a while I discovered some of the guest speakers must be Italian celebrities by the way they carried themselves and the reaction from the audience. As an outsider, I didn’t know what made them famous and they had no influence on me.
In North America, celebrities like Larry King have tremendous power. By watching the Italian celebrities, I suddenly realized WE were giving them the power to influence our mind and behaviors. Isn’t it true in relationships and other aspects of life? We often heard stories about abused wives chose to stay with their husband or staying in a job where the boss leaves something to be desired. This makes us feel powerless.
Who gave them the power in the first place?
No matter what situations we are in, we have to remember the only people who can let the other influence us are ourselves. After we turn over control of our own life, we have surrendered our power and reduced ourselves to a state of pain and weakness.
Why do people give up their power?
I guess for different reasons. Sometimes we think the other knows better or sometimes we just don’t want to take the responsibility. Quite often, we feel we don’t have a choice or that is the only feasible and available option. That used to be my explanation, but now whenever I tell myself I have no choice, I wonder, “Am I avoiding responsibility or just not looking hard enough for alternatives?”
I decided to be very careful about giving power to anybody else. When we feel powerless, we have to wonder where we lost it.
Thanks for reading.
