I think it's a good idea, but not a new idea.

RFID tags can be used everwhere, bandwidth is not the problem. The privacy is a big problem, because the system will track the item wherever it goes. And the cost of the tag is not negilable and can not be used on low value items. However if the totall tag volume increases, the price of the tag will drop dramaticly. You can find a lot of information on RFID tag.
