Air Canada and its regional carriers allow each customer to bring along two pieces of luggage which is carried in the baggage compartment of the aircraft at no charge. This is known as the 'free checked baggage allowance'. The overall measurement of each piece (L + W + H) must be less than 62 inches or 158 cm, and the weight less than 70 lbs. or 32 kgs. Don't exceed these limits or you'll have to pay an additional amount at the airport prior to travel. Note that checked baggage weighing more than 100 lbs or 45 kgs. will not be accepted.
Infants not occupying a seat are allowed one smaller 70 lb. piece with an overall measurement of no more than 45 ins. or 115 cm. Air Canada also carries the following baby equipment in the baggage compartment, free of charge: car seat, baby seat, bassinet, fully collapsible umbrella-style stroller.
Packing Tips
Remove all old airline tags from your luggage.
Attach identification tags to the inside and outside of the bag, giving destination as well as home addresses.
Keep all medications and high value items such as cameras, jewelry and cash with you, do not put them in checked baggage.
Please note that some seemingly harmless goods can be dangerous on board an aircraft and should not be packed in either checked or carry-on baggage. They are: lighters, matches, flammable or corrosive materials, compressed gases, poisons, radioactive material and infectious substances.
Sports Equipment (free baggage option)
Any one of the following sports items may be substituted for a free checked baggage allowance piece. However, when carried over and above this allowance, additional charges will be levied at the Airport.
Archery equipment
Covers a bow and arrows suitably packaged.
Fishing equipment
Includes two rods, one reel, one landing net, one pair of boots and a tackle box.
Golf clubs
A golf bag containing no more than 14 clubs, 12 golf balls and one pair of golf shoes. The bag and clubs must be fully enclosed in an an outer bag or cover.
Hockey equipment
Two hockey sticks taped together may be carried as extra baggage at no extra charge. Anything more will be considered an extra piece and excess charges will apply.
Scuba diving equipment
A set is considered to be one each of the following: empty scuba tank, air supply, regulator, pressure gauge, tank harness, face mask, pair of diving fins, snorkel, knife, speargun, air pistol and safety vest. All must be securely packed in one bag with the exception of the tank which can be carried separately.
Skis (snow or water)
A set of snow skis means one pair of skis, poles and boots. For water skis it's a pair, or a single slalom. No other items can be carried in the covering bag. These sets are considered as one piece of checked baggage.
Snowboards
A set consists of one snowboard and one pair of boots in a snowboard bag. No other items may be carried in the bag. The set is considered as one piece of checked baggage.
Sports Equipment subject to Excess Charges
Air Canada carries the following sports equipment as excess baggage at a reduced fee. Please note it cannot be substituted for the free baggage allowance.
Bicycles
There are fixed charges for the carriage of bicycles on North American routes:
within Canada - $ 65 CAD
to/from United States - $65 CAD/$ 50 USD.
The bicycle must be prepared as follows, prior to arrival at the airport: fix the handlebars sideways and remove the pedals. Place the bicycle in the plastic bicycle bag provided by Air Canada at the airport. Bicycle suitcases containing collapsible bicycles are also accepted.
Note: Bicycles are carried as part of the free baggage allowance on International flights (including Star Alliance™ carriers).
Canoes/Hang Gliders/Kayaks/Luges
Air Canada does not accept these items as checked baggage - they must travel as Cargo. Please contact the Air Canada Cargo office closest to you.
Surfboards
There is a fixed charge of $65 CAD or $50 USD for the carriage of surfboards on North American flights, and a charge equivalent to 50% of the normal excess rate for the first surfboard on International flights (no more than 109 ins. or 277 cms. long). Additional boards on international services are charged the full rate.
Windsurfers
Can be carried on most Air Canada Services. Carriage is subject to size, baggage compartment space limitations and space available at time of booking. In North America, the charge is $ 98 CAD or $ 75 USD. On international flights, normal excess baggage rates apply provided the windsurfer is not more that 109 ins. or 277 cms. long. Please phone Air Canada Reservations or the Central Baggage Office for full details.
