I feel so sorry for Mr. Geng and his family. There are several issues involved:
1. It is extremely difficult for new immigrants to find a job.
2. Since we all had excellent background and qualifications, it is even harder for us to adjust and accept job loss.
The last and mostly ignored one: do we know how to protect ourselves at workplace? Mr. Geng lost his job because he couldn't get along with his boss. As newcomers, we always tend to endure a lot of things because of our language obstacles or our culture influence. Maybe the boss took advantage of him because of that and forced him to leave the job. Canada's Human Rights Code clearly indicate that nobody should be discriminated or harrased because of their race, age, gender, etc. I strongly feel that we should make more people become aware of our rights as employees and avoid this kind of tragedy from happening again.
