It's all related to hormones and the differences in nursing "styles" of the mother and baby. Usually, an earlier return of menses is attributed to one or more of the following: baby sleeping though the night, starting baby on solid foods, weaning, bottle and/or pacifier use, and changes in frequency and duration of nursing.
A later return of menses can be caused by frequent breastfeeding around the clock, late introduction of solids, all of baby's sucking needs being satisfied at the breast, sleeping with baby, and wearing baby close to your body in a sling. Even under these varying circumstances, menstruation can return or be delayed at any point while breastfeeding.
