Students reading books at these levels will:
* Gather meaning from the pictures to read one line of text
* Follow a simple pattern in which one word changes on each page
* Control right to left movement
* Use oral language in relation to the text
* Predict what makes sense
Levels 2 - 7 Early Grade 1
By level 7 students will:
* Control early strategies (word-by-word matching and directional movement) on longer stretches of text
* Check on their reading using knowledge of letter-sound relationships, words, and parts of words
* Solve some unknown words independently
* Actively read for meaning
Levels 8-12 Mid Grade 1
By level 12 students will:
* Be aware of punctuation and use it for phrasing and meaning
* Analyze new words using graphophonic clues and then check them against what makes sense or sounds right
* Use known words and parts of words to get to new words
* Reread and self-correct close to the source of error
* Discuss ideas from the story in a way that indicates understanding
Levels 13-18 Late Grade 1/Early Grade 2
By level 18 students will:
* Read in a fluent manner, especially when rereading
* Problem solve new words competently in new text
* Demonstrate an understanding of characters and plot
* Use skills and strategies effectively on a variety of text
Levels 19-28 Grade 2
By level 28 students will:
* Read silently most of the time
* Effectively solve longer words
* Use a variety of word analysis strategies without losing meaning or fluency
* Demonstrate through discussion, writing and other media that they can understand and interpret stories and empathize with the characters
* Sustain characters and plot over several days
* Deal effectively with more complex ideas and a greater range of genre
Levels 29 - 38 Grade 3
By level 38 students will:
* Read a variety of literary and informational text and be able to gain information from each structure
* Sustain interest and meaning over many days
* Solve multisyllable words
* Cope with varied and sophisticated vocabulary
Levels 39 - 44 Grade 4
By level 44 students will:
* Read longer, more complex texts that require readers to retain and recall information to support ongoing comprehension of the text
* Cope with more sophisticated language, including figurative language and plays on words
