If this activity is focusing on the social/emotional developmental domain of children, which probably promotes sharing, celebrating, empathy among children as a group, what could have done is better communication between teacher and parents, such as, ask children enclose a note with the gift, explaining why they choose this gift, what they enjoy about this gift and what they want the receiver can get out from it. i.e: "I find this brand new toy. I like new toy. It makes me happy. I want another child who receive this to be happy too." or "This is my favorite toy. I love it so much. I play with it everyday. It is hard to find another one again. I want someone else enjoy it too. I can show you how to play this. I am very good at this game. " etc. Children can be much more creative than this. Let them be themselves. Let's learn from them.
