Lunch bag forces evacuation of TTC station during rush hour

A simple lunch bag feared to be a bomb forced hundreds of
people out of the Finch subway station in the city's north
end this morning during rush hour. The station reopened
about an hour ago.
Witnesses said they saw a suspicious person put the bag on
the platform before boarding the train at Finch station, on
the northern tip of the subway line at around 8:30 a.m.
Police said the mysterious package turned out to be
harmless.
''Naturally we have to use precaution whenever we get a call
like this,'' Staff Sgt. Jim Muscat said after fire and
ambulance officials and a bomb squad arrived.
''We have to assume that there's potential threat there so
we take every precaution.''
Recent terrorist attacks in the United States have put many
people on edge, and officials on alert for the possibility
of further attacks since Canada sent military overseas to
assist in a U.S.-led anti-terrorism campaign.
Muscat said it's not unusual for police to get occasional
calls of suspicious packages and that the procedure taken
today was normal.
''If this was a year ago we would have done it the same
way,'' he said.
Yesterday, a downtown Montreal building was evacuated after
reports that a company received a suspicious envelope from
Florida's American Media Inc., where the deadly anthrax
bacteria was found last week.
On Monday, a Winnipeg family of five called police after
they had respiratory problems shortly after someone opened a
box of latex gloves from Malaysia.
The family's illness turned out to be an allergic reaction
to the gloves.
Today's scare closed the subway station for about an hour
and a half. Shuttle buses were used to accommodate
commuters.
Passengers were told through overhead speakers that there
