honestly, the tone is sincere.~ You see, no.5 is difficult enough for me to grasp, so you have good reason to have my admiration.

I have indicated in previous discussions that I listen to very little music written after 1890's, which is partly why I'm not entirely too comfortable with Mahler's music. His musical language is relatively alien to me compared with that of, say, Brahms. Although both composers wrote very personal music, I somehow have a profound affinity to Brahm's melancholic and introspecitive characters. Perhaps, when I become 50 or older, I will probably get the hang of Mahler's music, because it really takes experience of a lifetime to understand Mahler.

Thanks, you brought up a good discussion~

        • 对了,有时还会把老虎唱成是老鼠。

      • Very good~ If you liked Bernstein's style, you would love his Mahler. Special attention to Symphony no.2: I watched his live performance in Edinburgh festival with London SO. Exhilarating! breathtaking!
I was awe-struck and jaw-dropped after the magnificent ending ... couldn't speak a word for 2 min .... Completely down on my knees. I am heathen, but that particular moment you feel like being embraced in God's boundless warmth.

I don't get such feelings in the equally famous, but stolid and square, performance by Klemperer. You see, that's the problem with many Austro-German conductors of the past generation. They tend to play everything slowly and in strict accordance with the score, without changes in tempo and dynamic. The end result is more often than never a passionless performance, in which everything is right in place, but when taken as a whole, it just doesn't spark.~~ Klemperer was an archetype. He is great in Beethoven and Brahms, but Mahler is different from the 2 B's and so must be taken differently. Mahler's is highly personal and eccentric music. You need someone with a touch of genius or individual charisma to handle him.
        • If a heathen could write as well as you do, I would be more than willing to be a heathen. ;-) I thought that I was a heathen, but I now could only call myself a Hunhun'er. ;-(
        • I haven't listened to Mahler's No. 2. However, I felt my pulse from Mahler's No. 5.
          • You have my deep reverence~ I have always venerated people who appreciate Mahler's symphonies other than no.2, specially when it comes to no.6, 7 and 9. partly becuase i think no.2 is the most accessible one.
            • I am scared by your comment partly because I've only had access to No. 1 and No. 5 as yet. I'm not quite sure how I should take the tone in your compliment, but I will get to his other pieces. ;-)

                • "50 or older"?, hey! I'm not that old! ;-)
I cannot say I grasp any music at this point. I can only say that I love all the music that "moves" me. Mahler's No. 5 moved me a great deal. I always love this type of "bitter sweet" feel. Quite frankly, you don't get the feel often.
            • No.1 is not accessible?
Besides some interesting orchestration, the symphony sounds like one straight from the Beethoven-Brahms school. Especially the third movement, where the nusery song is used. It confirms closely to the sonata structure.
              • jin tian hui jia chong ting no.1, hehe
          • 这些好歹还挂一个中国人姓氏的作曲家名字,[打倒土豪]啥《三大纪律八项注意》的,可是原封不动地用了原曲,只是填上中文词。
        • 有没有《三大纪律八项注意》的原曲谱?请桌子贴一下
        • 三大纪律八项注意 原是大清国的 "皇帝练兵歌".
          • thanks, see herev [至于它是哪个国家的歌曲的问题,仍然有待今后的继续研究。]
      • This is GCD version. GMD version should be {打倒 Lie Qiang、打倒 Lie Qiang, Chu Jun Fa}
      • 本来就是童谣, 被马勒借用了.
    • 受益。前几天在MALL里有个洋人的小孩用这个调子唱“here i am”不知有没有这个歌?
      • 找到一首儿歌的Here I am。可clip太短,听不出来是用这个调子唱的。
        • Here I Am 歌词:
          Here I am
          Yes I am
I will be here in the morning
And I'll be here in the night

          Here I am
          Oh yes I am
I will be here in the morning
I will be here by your side

          Here I am
          Here I am
It's all right now, It's all right now
No no you don't have to cry

And all your dreams are closer now

I will hold you 'til the morning
          I will hold you tight

And all your dreams are happy ones

I will be here in the morning and
I'll be here through the night
I will be here through the night
I'll be right here by your side

          Here I am
