FOCUS GROUP on Essential Skills and Workplace Literacy: A Life Cycle Approach
I had sent a notice out earlier regarding the focus group planned for Saturday. The National Visible Minority Council on Labour Force Development (NVMCLFD) is conducting a research and community development project on essential skills and workplace literacy as it relates to visible minorities. As part of this project, we are assisting them in holding a focus group to engage those involved in visible minority issues.
The focus group will be held on August 26, 2006 (Saturday) from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm at the Centre for Social Innovation at 215 Spadina Avenue, in Toronto. A BIG thanks to everyone for helping to spread the word and to CCNC Toronto Chapter and NARCC for assisting us with booking the facilities.
The purpose of the focus group is to receive input:
On the gaps and opportunities at different stages of visible minorities’ life-cycle as it impacts on their literacy skills and labour force outcomes;
On factors which determine literacy and essential skills development of visible minorities;
We are seeking participants with one or more of the following characteristics:
Participants representing a range of age groups including the span of working age population (15-64)
Participants include both Canadian-born and immigrants
Direct experience with the labour market issues of visible minorities
Direct experience in the delivery of training, counselling, or other labour market related services to visible minorities
Have researched literacy and/or essential skills as they relate to the needs of visible minorities
Be a visible minority person that has been a participant in a literacy and/or essential skill program
As you know, workplace, labour force and immigration policies intersect for our constituencies. Interestingly, the discourse is changing to the need for people to fill jobs and not the other way around. We expect that these and other related issues will be highlighted in the fall session of Parliament (and elsewhere of course).
Currently, we have more than 20 people confirming their attendance for Saturday. If you or any interested persons from your agency would like to attend, please pass along the contact info to me asap if you have not already done so.
Thanks again for your help,
Victor Wong
