Councillor Michael Walker urged city council yesterday to deal with his call to kill the raise which will drive up a councillor's annual salary from $87,214 to $95,000. Mayor David Miller's yearly take will increase from $147,856 to $160,000.
However, Miller ruled that Walker's motion could not be dealt with at the inaugural meeting of the new city council for procedural reasons.
Councillors spent more than two hours bickering over committee appointments and the hours council will meet in the future, but the salary issue was out of bounds for debate.
Walker's call to rescind the salaries will be on the agenda at the next council meeting in early February.
Walker argued that Miller should have made an accommodation to allow councillors to do battle over the raise before it kicks in.
"It should be dealt with now and clear the decks on this issue," Walker insisted.
Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone noted that all but one of the incumbents who ran for council seats in the Nov. 13 election were victorious.
"I think the people have said that's not the biggest issue," Pantalone added. "If it was, you would have seen most councillors lose, including the mayor."
Members of the last city council approved the raise for the politicians elected last month. Defeated mayoral candidate Jane Pitfield promised to roll back the raise.
