this work opens the triptych of Tchaikovsky's last symphonies, which may well be described as reflections of teh composers psychological state. The history of the work's origins is closely connected with the most intimate details of its composer's life: on 18 July 1877 he had married his pupil Antonina Milyukova - at her urging and despite his own grave misgivings.
