Every year, when the weather turned nice, Prince Esterhazy -- Franz Joseph Haydn's employer -- moved his entire household to his summer palace. When it turned cold again, everyone moved back to the main palace in the city. But one fall, it stayed warm for a very long time, and the prince didn't budge. Since the musicians were considered as servants, they were not allowed to bring their family. So after a long summer, the musicians in his orchestra wanted to go home, they begged the director Haydn to find a way. Haydn found a musical way to tell the prince it was time to go: the Farewell Symphony.
Here was the Farewell Symphony.
It started with a group of instruments and the first three movements were very normal and smooth and harmony….So it was the beginning of the last movement, then a pause and changed mood. All a sudden, two of the horn musician stood up and blow out the candles and left the stage. Then more string musician left, pretty soon the other bass left. Then the double base left…so did the cello, which made the orchestra pretty and quiet.
By the time three more instruments took off, the stage was almost empty… and the music goes soft and soft, quiet and quiet…
Luckily the Prince liked the amusement and knew the implying. The next they all headed home.
The poem The Farewell Symphony I written depicts the farewell from natural scenes. It is the season for leaves, birds to retreat and leave.
It starts the blue sky clear and high, since it is fall. And soon leaves fall and the colors of mountains change. River goes quiet and reeds wave tall.
Snow will bring hibernation soon; it is time for wild geese to leave and the scene behind goes pale and pale.
Yet in the second verse, the wind still mingles with home beckoning. This is a natural way to show farewell is always kind of challenge to balance after a wonderful and charming summer. So in the third verse, the echoes and ebbs drown, drown, and pale, pale… to reflect the leaving…
The Farewell Symphony
The autumn sky is clear and high,
Reeds stretch out in wild fields.
Birdcalls fade in sparse branches,
Rivers silently collect fallen leaves.
Shadows begin to grow tall;
Hills mute in their shattered hues.
Winds mingle in deep valleys,
Candles beckon towards home.
Soon snow will blank everything below;
Flocks of geese call up and fly high.
Go, go…Their echoes and ebbs fall,
then drown, drown
pale and pale...更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
