Besides, the 60's was a different time than today. It was a time when America and Europe are under a direct threat of total war with USSR that could result in mutual annihilation. There were drills for air raids in America cities almost every week. And as more and more countries are converted to communism, America felt it was just a matter of time before the communist invasion of North America. The Bay of Pig incident and invasion of Vietnam happened under that background and most Americans supported Kennedy at that time since they knew that allowing the Russians to deploy nuclear arms a few hundred miles off the coast of USA was not an option
