Canada on track for another budget surplus-Harper

OTTAWA, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Canada is not at risk of falling into a federal budget deficit despite a sharper than expected economic slowdown, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Monday.

Harper told reporters that revenues have continued to climb, allowing the government to remain on track so far in the 2008-09 fiscal year to post a 12th consecutive budget surplus.

Ottawa expects a surplus this fiscal year of C$2.3 billion ($2.1 billion).

      • Really? Only sales tax, not income tax; lots of unemployment now than ever; privatize health care? What else?
        • In the last few years of Conservative government, I didn't see any negative impact on the income tax and unemployment and health care, that's why Harper is getting more and more supports. However, on the provincial level,
Library has done lots of bad things to us. Increase tax, adding health tax, reduce health coverage, i.e. annual eye check....
      • Control freak, hiding facts, misleading the public, making empty promises…
        • These are exactly what the library provincial government had done to us! The Fed library will do the same thing.
          • Christian left Canada 100B surplus after in power for 10+yrs, Harper is exhausting the money he inherited, Mike Harris dug a huge deficit for ON with 10B imposed to us. What are you talking about?

              • Harper's words and promises? Worth nothing. If he is still in power, Canada will repeat what is happening in the U.S for sure.
      • Harper was lucky to have got the 100b+ surplus to play with. Or he had no chance to buy your vote - 100/m for your child, GST Cut? Nothing at tall. Be real.
          • Totally blind and senseless. All money comes from tax payers to run the government. Keeping budget in surplus for 13yrs was a big success for the Liberal. How much left now after all the crazy spending by Harper? Almost none.
Watch the release of Afghanistan war spending report. Interesting show…
            • I have stated my point clearly here. No point to go further. THX
              • You don't have anything that is valid.
        • 100/M for my kid is the only money I received. screw 自由党, I will get zero/month regardless how much it raise for child benefit.
          • How much have you contributed to the country? 100/m is more than enough for you which you really do not deserve.
            • are you dumb. the reason for no receiving child benefit is simple. I paid too much income tax! so some dumb can enjoy the money we paid.
              • Miserliness may turn to evil. You paid too much for tax? How? You have got too much from Canada and rest of our tax payers.
              • Penny or penny pincher?
              • Typical pleonexia. Paying little to get a lot, not paying but expect to get… Too sad to see this kind of reality. Never get enough.
          • First and foremost, Liberal’s immigration policy allowed to have moved to Canada. Do you not get free Medicare, child tax benefit, tax credit?
      • Federal Program expenses: 2004-176.3 billion; 2008 - 196.5 billion, expenses up 20 billion under a "small" government!
