Obama On Bailout Failure: “Get This Done” WESTMINSTER, CO — Barack Obama urged calm in the markets and the American public after the economic bailout bill failed to pass the House - telling Congress, “get this done.”

“Democrats and Republicans, step up to the plate. Get it done,” Obama said, addressing his remarks to lawmakers in Washington. “And understand even as you get it done to stabilize the markets, we have more work to do to make sure that Main Street is getting the same kind of help that Wall Street is getting. We cannot forget who this is for. This is for the American people.”

Obama was 40 minutes late coming to the stage, telling the crowd he’d spent the time talking with Treasury Secretary Paulson and Speaker Pelosi following the bill’s defeat. “They are still trying to work through this rescue package. And obviously this is a very difficult thing to do. It’s difficult because we shouldn’t have gotten here in the first place,” he said.

“Democratic and Republican leaders have agreed, but members have not yet agreed. And there are going to be some bumps and trials and tribulations and ups and downs before we get this rescue package done,” Obama said. “It’s important for the American public and for the markets to stay calm because things are never smooth in Congress, and to understand that it will get done.”

“I know a lot of people are nervous. A lot of people in this audience and a lot of people who may be watching today. But now is not the time for fear. Now is not the time for panic.”

Saying such a package is needed to stabilize the markets, make sure that small businesses can meet payrolls, and ensure workers’ 401k plans, Obama said “I’m confident that we are gonna get there, but it’s gong to be a little rocky.”

“It’s sort of like flying into Denver. You know you’re going to land, but it’s not always fun going over those mountains,” he said to cheers.

While he declined to cast blame on any one person for the crisis, Obama told the crowd to think about what the two candidates have said in the past. “You can’t undergo a crisis conversion. You can’t, after 26 years of saying we should continue doing what George Bush has been doing say, I’m not for that. You can’t reverse yourself like that,” he said. “It’s not that Senator McCain doesn’t care. He does care. I think he just doesn’t get it.”

“I read the other day that Senator McCain likes to gamble. He likes to roll those dice,” said Obama. “One thing I know is this – we can’t afford to gamble on four more years of the same disastrous economic policies we’ve had for the last eight.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

The House of Representatives today rejected a $700 billion plan to bail out the U.S. financial system, putting a roadblock in front of the largest government intervention in the markets since the Great Depression. The Dow reacted sharply, plummeting more than 600 more points after the voting ended.
    • The measure needs 218 votes for passage. Democrats voted 141 to 94 in favor of the plan, while Republicans voted 65 to 133 against. Republicans, what are you doing? back and forth several times.
      • Those Republicans are voting against moral hazard, and this is good.
      • Good move, the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Reagan is dumping George. W. Bush & friends, and going back to its root. What the market needs is fairness, trust, and a system that reward success but also punish failures,
such a socialist style bailout betrays the basic principle of capitalist system and will only make the matter much worse in the future
        • Anyway, Bush 太没面子了。
          • This will definately make Harper nervus.
            • Not only Harper, this makes the whole world nervous.
              • Harper the most. He may not have a Perm job after all.
                • All the leaders in the democrat countries can't have a permanent job; they have to reapply every couple of years; and some only can reapply once. Of course, China is an exception -- Chinese leader may hold it as a permanent job.
                  • Who has had a perm one in China after Mao?
              • This thing still needs to be dealt with, from the bottom up, not the top down. Pumping so much money to Wall Street with borrowed money will encourage corruption, greed, unfairness and failures.
And leave the government with no money to help those that really need help . They need to establish a fund with those billions of dollors to directly help the struggling homeowners, unemployed, and start projects that can stimulate economic growth and employment. FBI must complete a full investigation of any criminal wrongdoing of the corporations that played games that contributed to this crisis, and ask those responsible to give back their ill-gotten gains. These are all required to stabilize housing and stock market and restore investor confidence and trust.
                • That's Obama's language! If there is not better solution, the price has to be paid, as long as the taxpayer's interest is protected.
                  • Tax payers interests are NOT going to be protected by purchasing bad debt from banks.
                    • Have you read it?
                      • Read what? The bad debt? I don't think it needs much brain to think through: Investors find the debts toxic!
