In a company blog post, Senior Analyst Terry Norman of research firm Analysys Mason has casted doubt on the future of WiMAX expansion in developed markets where the technology needs continued investment from large firms like Cisco, Intel, and Motorola but is struggling to show advantages over other 4G technologies.
Norman says that Clearwire's launch has been disappointing and notes that companies like Google and Intel are writing off billions of dollars they had invested in the technology. Meanwhile, Ericsson's purchase of Nortel's Long Term Evolution assets is encouraging a shift to LTE in North America. Additionally, data from the firm's research shows that most operators in Europe are considering LTE over WiMAX.
He credits WiMAX as being a 4G technology well-suited to developing nations but notes that it has been unable to create markets in developed countries because of a lack of broadband spectrum. [via mocoNews]
