why not? if you want to find the professional job you had to become the expert in your professional domain at least you are in some aspects. time is gone, but it always the junior level?

I'm not sure I could spend much time on it, you know the GIS is a big subject, 3D technology is a small part in it, what's the purpose for us, we do want to develop a engine likes OpenGL or DirectX? i'm not sureBut I do like the math algorithm for 3D, my major is mathematics:)

for my experience, you may need some third part software (with image process tool) and integrate to your application (VC, VB or Jave based..).otherwise, you will have large time-consume work to code algrithms by yourself and also it is very possible to have mistake.
