What I did to get rid the gridlines:create a macro to disable the gridlines and save it in one xlt file and save this file in xlstart folder. every time when excel starts, this macro will run. But this is a compromise to excel file security unless you know exactly what this macro does.

New book, unchecked the gridlines from Tools->Option->View, save it as Book.xlt and put the Book.xlt into C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART folder.
