The more gold medals a team has, the less value people put on these medals. It's called marginal benefit. Other nations treat Olympic just as a sports game (although a very important game). Chinese government treats it like a war that it has to win.

美国人,不是第一也要变革方式排排,弄个第一 --- NBC has been ranking medals like this since they started to report Olympics, no matter how much medals they get.

CNN did that, if NBC did not, nothing strange. So what? China is still No. 1, we are proud of that.

What I am saying is that they have been ranking medals like this for every Olympic, not just the Beijing one. If they suddenly change to rank by gold medals now, it would be a bit strange, don't you think so?

I'm not saying there's no need to celebrate. Just mention couple facts to put things in perspective.I still believe there're better places to use the money and enery especially when they just got hit by a devastating earthquake, and many people are suffering from inflation and stock market crash
