A 7.9-magnitude strong earthquake suddenly devastated Wenchuan County (also the Giant Panda Reservation & Protection Area and International Giant Panda Research Center Base), Sichuan Province, China, at the local time of 14:28pm on Monday, May 12th, 2008. It spread across most part of China, and most of Asian countries felt the jolts as well.

It shocked the world, and it shocked our hearts that are connected with our motherland. The deadly and devastating earthquake was equal to 269 atomic bombs’ explosion power and energy release.

Up to now, at least 14,800 people are dead, and the death toll is expected to arise dramatically as rescue teams are reaching and searching through the most affected areas, and 80 percent of buildings were toppled down in one county. In the cities and towns near the earthquake's epicenter, up to 26,000 people are still buried in the rubbles of the collapsed buildings. It is estimated at least a few thousands of children and school students are still buried in the collapsed school buildings because the earthquake took place at school time. These shocking figures include: Jiuyuan Secondary School in Dujiangyan City of Sichuan, one of the six-storey teaching buildings collapsed totally down to the ground and more than 1,200 students and teachers have been buried in the rubbles; many of the school buildings collapsed in Beichuan, Mianyang, Deyang, Chongqing as well.

The serious disaster touched the hearts of the Chinese people all over the world and peoples of the world. The rest of the world has already set off fund-raising campaign and effort. We Canadian Chinese have rapidly swept into action to make every effort and contribution to help the victims and people in the disaster areas. By joined efforts, a number of Chinese Societies, Alumni Associations, the local medias, enterprises and enthusiastic people for public affairs, set up a joint "China Sichuan Earthquake Disaster Relief Committee" on May 12th, 2008. The committee now calls on all the Canadian Citizens, immigrants, all friends of different nations, all ethnic groups, enterprises, social organizations, and the Chinese community and compatriots, please make every effort and contribution to help those people in suffering and to help the reconstruction activities in earthquake-stricken area.

Please help the injured, innocent children and those helpless and anxious victims. Please extend your helping hand and kind heart. Timely contributions are crucial and one bottle of water or one bag of food may save a life. Please give your donations to the people who are still suffering in the after mess and nightmare of the sudden natural disasters. Please do not hesitate to help for the fund-raising and please donate whatever you can.

We hope that with more people to contribute, there will be little less suffering and reduced pain in the disaster affected area. Please kindly help your Chinese brothers and sisters, the children, and the giant pandas as well to overcome the most difficult time.

Let us act now immediately, and you will ignite an infinite hope for love and you will warm the hearts of tens of thousands of families!更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

May,12 ,2008 at 2:28 pm in the afternoon, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 ( on the Richter Scale) occurred in Wenchuan County ,Sichuan( an area of 32 million people) suddenly, spreading to Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei , Shanxi, Sanxi, Hebei ,Gansu , as far as Beijing 1500 miles away. The violent earthquake convulsed China and shocked the world, especially for overseas Chinese people .

The earthquake energy is two times greater than energy generated in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake. The disaster is massive; the number died who have been found continues to grow. So far , 15,000 died , countless are missing buried under earth and various structures. Many homes , schools and other building collapsed. Eight counties were flattened . Rescue workers located 2,300 of the 9,000 people of Yinxiu, a town near the epicentre in Wenchuan county. Xinhua said 18,645 people were still buried in debris in and around Mianyang , a city about 100 kilometres east of the epicentre. All but a handful of the more than 900 upperclassmen at a school in Juyuan were believed trapped under the slabs of cement , bricks , tile and twisted cables . Only one survivor has been found by a rescue team. Many school buildings collapsed in Beichuan ,Mianyang , Deyang , Chongqing and so on. There are 2,559 schools being damaged and 3,275 school buildings collapsed around 60 counties in Anhui. 39 school buildings are smashed around 10 Counties in Weinan City.

People who saw and heard this catastrophic natural disaster want to do what they could contribute for their fellow citizens, family and friends , and provide the means for warm heart and like-minded people to do the same. Sichuan Earthquake Relief Committee is organized by many associations ,schools, local media , enterprises and relief volunteers . Overseas Chinese people have started donations throughout the world immediately . We appeal to community , civic and religious associations , Canadian government , in particular to Chinese people and their friends , colleagues and neighbours to give help to the earthquake-stricken area.

Let us focus on supporting all the people who are not able to help themselves presently. In particular, rebuilding schools to permit the surviving students to continue their studies. Let us help the people in this severely afflicted area and encourage them to know that the people around the world would like to assist them to pull through and overcome this disaster and continue living.

We invite all warm-hearted people to help the people in stricken area to rebuild their home and life . Let us act now, thousands of people in the stricken area are waiting for you. Your devotion will provide support, backing this up with your acts of love will ignite their hope.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
