Ottawa – The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, and the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Canada is contributing $1 million to support the emergency response of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) following the May 12 earthquake in China. In addition, as stated yesterday in the House of Commons by Minister Oda, the Government of Canada will also match individual donations to humanitarian organizations.
'Canada is deeply concerned about the impact of the earthquake and this support will help ensure that the basic needs of affected communities are met quickly and effectively,' said Minister Oda. 'In the face of so much devastation, Canada will continue to work closely with trusted partners to help bring relief to those affected and provide support as people rebuild their lives and communities.'
'On behalf of all Canadians, I want to extend my sincere condolences to those who are suffering in China as a result of the recent earthquake," said Minister Bernier. 'We share the grief of those who have lost loved ones in recent days and stand with them in this time of need. We wish to express our support to and solidarity with the brave individuals involved in the rescue and relief efforts, which have been rapid and effective. Canadian officials are actively working to ensure that Canada continues its leadership role in responding to this crisis.'
Canada's contribution will help provide emergency shelter, medical services and relief items, as well as water and sanitation services. The IFRC is working with the Red Cross Society of China to mobilize experts and relief operations to affected areas.
