Manulife Supports China Earthquake Relief Efforts
May 16, 2008

We extend our sympathies to those affected by the devastating earthquake that took place in China on Monday, May 12, 2008. Manulife-Sinochem – our joint venture operation in China – has confirmed that all local staff and agents are now accounted for and are safe and well.

In response to the disaster, corporate donations to the Red Cross are being made from the Company’s operations in Canada, the U.S. and Asia. We have already had a great response from employees and agents in Asia who are giving alongside the Company and we are confident of being able to exceed our initial commitment of donating at least RMB 2million (US$285,000). Further details of how you can make a donation are below.

Funds raised will be primarily used to support the Red Cross in providing aid to the areas of China most impacted by the disaster. In keeping with Manulife’s commitment to supporting the communities in which it operates, a portion of Manulife’s corporate donation will also be used directly in Sichuan Province to help schoolchildren and teachers at schools destroyed by the earthquake.

Mr. Robert A. Cook, Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager, Asia said: “We were all shocked and saddened by Monday’s terrible events and we would like to express our sympathy to the victims and their families. Our immediate priority was to ensure the safety of all our staff and agents in China. Now that we have done so, our focus turns to ensuring we do what we can to support the relief effort and to help local people start to rebuild their lives. Manulife colleagues from around the world are working together to offer support to the people of Sichuan Province.”

Manulife-Sinochem has five sales offices in Sichuan Province – in Mianyang, Deyang, Nangchong, Zigong and Chengdu. Three of the sales offices – in Nangchong, Zigong and Deyang - are operational. We expect to recommence operations in Mianyang and Chengdu in the coming days. The Company has a total of 766 staff and agents in Sichuan Province.

How you can help

Employees and agents in Asia:

If you would like to help, you can donate via the following website link to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Through this link, you can donate directly to help their China earthquake relief efforts.

http://donate.ifrc.org/

Alternatively, it provides a link to the local Red Cross or Red Crescent in your country or territory so you may choose to contribute locally instead, and so attract any national tax relief.

Some territories’ Red Cross or Red Crescent organizations may not yet have dedicated China Earthquake appeals set up. In this situation, you may still donate using the online donation form on the front page of the website link above.

In addition, the Asia Division has set up a matching donation program for its employees, with the Company matching contributions on a one-for-one basis. If you decide to make a donation, please send your donation receipt to your local Marketing and Communications department so that we can arrange the matching donations as quickly as possible.

Please mark envelope "Receipt for Donation to China Earthquake Relief" to facilitate collection.

Employees in Canada:

Please click on the following link to donate directly to China earthquake relief efforts through the Canadian Red Cross:
