Then it's basically impossible to get it back. The police won't be helpful in such case. I got a break-in and lost lots of things, never hear any follow-up from the police.

Once I found an iPad in an empty shopping cart outside a grocery. Obviously that person was reading something on iPad while shopping. I took it to the customer service and left my phone number. Later they told me the owner went back to pick it up.
