In 2000, the Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft (CAAST) estimated that Canada had a piracy rate of approximately 38%, meaning that one in every three business software programs in use were illegally pirated copies. The resulting loss to the Canadian software industry in 2000 was more than $450 million (Cdn).
