Thank you to give us such advice. I found it's difficult to join the lunch talk,i always have no topic to share. most of time, i can only listen to others, the topics which native talk about always seem far from my life. so I'm also embarrassed by this problem.

in Rome, do as Romans---in Canada, talk about hockey, that is the wat I get close/friendly/ez-going with my colleagues and clients. in fact hockey is notthat unacceptable even for female. talk about Matt Sundin's score, talk about "Cujo"s save, talk about Tie Domi's punching...
any other topics including TV shows, vacation resorts.... are good and easy. it is improper or even disadvantageous to sit alone in a corner or be only with putonghua-speakers---rounder's article is very helpful.
