Too much 功利性.礼尚往来 means you get what they give you and you give what you have. It does not mean you give back what you have received from others.
At Chinese mid-fall festival, a Chinese give Chinese moon cakes to his western friends and not expecting a return.
As 礼尚往来, the westerner friends may invite the Chinese for a cup of coffee.
