You failed to mention the Reformation in Germany altogether. Martin Luther, the Protestant church, the new religion, and all that stuff. Where would you place them in historical context?and the Sturm und Drang .... The Enlightenment was not confined to France only. Remember both Mozart and Haydn were members of the Freemasonry, and Beethoven was notably under the influence of the free spirit that characterized the Enlightenment. By the way, I'm reading Solomon's biography on Beethoven, just finished the part on his Bonn period.
Really, why would the Germans feel inferior to the rest of Europe? I can't agree with you on this.

most of the movements i mentioned in other countries have been associated with significant improvement of the economic well being of average people in those countriesbut not in Germany, especially not in the eastern part of Germany. Economically (and maybe militarily) they had been dominated by those countries until one hundred years after industrial revolution when German became a leader in steel and chemical industry. Not for long, though, they then suffered defeat in World War I... It had been a nation frustrated with its fate.

Media here is always several years behind reality when it comes to China.with the huge trade deficit in the US and the cheap goods in Wal Mart, they finally realized the economic importance of China, which they should have many years ago.

Ah ha! Economics is your tour de force, I will not argue with you on that, certainly you have much more insight than anyone on this forum. But on matters concerning culture and art, I will hold my belief.Everyone should have known by now, without the advent of Martin Luther's epoch-making reform on Christianity, a lot of cultural innovations and political changes could not have been possible. Bach, for one, could not have composed his 200+ cantatas had there not been a German transcription of the Bible formerly written in Latin.

I agree on that. Without reformation renaissance in Italy might be quite different. But the impact of reformation seemed to have its largest economic impact in England and the largest cultural impact in Italy, but not in Germany. Again, it's not about the backwardness of intellectuals or elites, but the backwardness of a nation
