i know exchange server is an email server, what does sharepoint do? is back-office-sofware a set of software of microsoft products? how does it relate to ERP system? thx.

It depends on the industrial, if you are talking about investment banking:Front Office - Most of them are trading system, and related risk management system.
Back Office - Not direct to influence the trader's activity, most of them are batch system, like general ledger.
