枫下佳缘 / 快乐单身 / 感觉ASKER同学的英文很好,不让人用英文的是妒嫉。。。我的英文三把刀,想请教一下ASKER老师“I heard that Chinese men are the more difficult ones to please. ” 其中的ARE是应该跟HEARD用WERE还是说用ARE也行啊?

I prefer to use "are" in this sentence, because the action -- I "heard" --happened in the past, so that I used the past tense, but "Chinese men are the most difficult (ones) to please" is an objective statement,so that I think it should be in the present tense instead of the past tense.

I would very much like to answer your question, but I couldn't due to my limited knowledge. You may ask your western friends which one is right , "to be pleased" or "to please". My friends use "to please" as well.

"to please" is more idiomatic. We say "it is a good thing to do" rather than "it is a good thing to be done".

I heard that Chinese men are the more difficult ones to please的问题more是个比较级,A和B进行比较的时候才用.
Between A and B, A is the more difficult one to please.
如果要单独成句, 要用最高级most.
所以说成 I heard that Chinese men are the most difficult ones to please也不错.
或者你也可以说 I heard that Chinese men are more difficult to please than
the other men in this world.
或者你也可以说 I heard that Chinese men are very difficult to please.
算了,你写你的吧, 我不会看了.

Why? Even if you did mean Chinese men are the MORE difficult ones (not necessarily the MOST), you can still use 'more'. So it means Chinese men are the more difficult ones to please (than men in other races).By the way your English is very good (by my standard). How did you lean it so well?

No, I do not think so. ==> #2690357. more当比较级用的时候,要有than. 而当有the+ 比较级 + 形容词+sth的时候(Asker文),要有上下文,或用between A and B结构.Asker单独地拽出这么句话,就是病句.

"The more difficult ones to please" has NO grammar mistakes. "The" is the infinite article for "ones", NOT the adverb for "more". But it's also right to use "most" here.I suggest you read more English books. The grammar we have learnt in textbooks is not enough.
Honestly, I dont think your english is THAT good, but I understand it makes people happy to believe "i am the best". No offense : )
By the way, I cannot input Chinese... that's why I write in English.

You should read more English books. 这里的more很明显不是比较级.You should read more English books. more在这里是形容词因为它后面跟的是名词.本身是更多的意思.
而当more用在形容词前面的时候,就是副词--比较级.比较一下:
More difficult 和More difficulties的不同
more difficult ones, more是副词而不是形容词.双形容词并列修饰名词时,单个形容词也可以用来修饰这个名词. 你没有办法所more ones,尽管你可以说difficult ones. 所以Asker文中的more是副词,当比较级用
"The grammar we have learnt in textbooks is not enough". 嘿嘿,真的学好了 嘛?读透了吗?

I dont know what you are arguing about. Apparently you didn't understand what I was saying."More" here is of course an adverb, but "the" is not an adverb for "more", but an article for "ones", so here it doesn't have to be followed by "most". "More difficult" is an adjective phrase for "ones". "The more" is not always wrong --- you need to read the whole sentence. Lots of people have taken TOEFL. And maybe quite a few got perfect in grammar. So think twice before you show off.

我说的不是the有问题,我前面的一个例子里有The more difficult one的例子#2689652,我是说这种用法是比较级,不能离开上下文而存在.我给你看得文章中也有"Maybe that is the better way".如果没有上下文时,要指定两者A和B, 没有限定时, the就错了!

"指定两者A和B" is not necessary here because we all understand Asker was comparing Chinese men with the men from other countries. There IS context from which you can guess the meaning of that sentence.Anyways, I have no intention to convince you, 'cause I know you think highly of yourself. : )

偶英文不够精劲,口语经常有小错误,曾经很自卑,自从N年前打工的时候跟一个当地的同事聊天,她在描述她做了什么的时候用了很长的一句排比“I DOES THIS, I DOESTHAT, I DOES。。。。, I DOES。。。。”从此后自卑一扫而光而且无所畏惧地开始胡说八道。。。。。
这样时间长了有时候居然糊涂了正确的语法是什么,甚至从前从不含糊的语法,也有点那不准了

I agree with you the fact that well-educated Canadians wouldn't say 'I does.....", but I did hear from a lot of well educated Canadians, native, say 'don't do nothing'.Language is such a cultural thing that different cultures (of English) made this language so alive and diversified. Just like Shanghainese say '不要太好噢‘, which doesn't make sense gramartically but it's so widely accepted.
