Stern's trip was much later, when China already started to open up, and the trip was more of a professional one, interacting mainly with professional musicians in China. But the trip of the Philadelphia Orchestra was part of the symbolic events (along with China's table tennis team visiting the US) during the honeymoon period between US and China.
