语音有一现象是, 短音与长音比较, 重音落在长音上可能性大一点. DEMI MOORE这一名字, 可以说DEMI两音节都弱, 重音在姓上, 因为MOORE含长音节.

a related point, in general, English is pretty bad for pronounciation. Only English speeking people would call Roma "Rome". Much worse than the Chinese translation "罗马"

I think it's more than that. Somehow I get the feeling that these English speaking people do not care too much about getting the pronounciation right.That's why I have persisted in using my Chinese name in my workplace, so that I have many chances to tell them the RIGHT way to pronounce my name. Now most of my collegues can pronounce my name perfectly right. So, if we give them the chance, they WILL learn. :))))

英文名变成意文时都要被加上元音, 象Jane->Giovanna, 单音节变成了3音节, 意文变英文时自然就要用减法. :)

非也. 讲究约定俗成只是Anglo Saxon的传统. (最早的牛津词典里没有定义, 只有例句). 法文则要严格得多. 就象英国的法律是以案例为依据, 而法国的法律是以大法典为基础一样.

For instance, the english way of saying "beethoven" is far off from the german urtext. I confirmed with my German friend the correct pronouciation should be something like "BEE-TOE-FEN".The chinese translation actually comes closer to it.
